HYPE stands for “Helping Youth Prepare for Employment” and is a program of the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas. The Workforce Alliance hosts a number of career-oriented camps over the summer for youth who are too young to get paying jobs. If they attend all the sessions and complete the work, they get paid as they would if they had a part-time job.

This was the first year the WMCC has sponsored the camp, and to quote Chelsea Daniels from Workforce Alliance, “it was hands down one of the best experiences the students had all summer!”.

Over the 5 days the students had SCSO Deputy Cinotto and her K-9 partner Wick (who was the highlight of the week) give a demonstration, Dr. Shelly Steadman told them about the Forensic Science Center, they toured the county jail (which included lunch), got to set through the closing arguments in a trial, went to WSU Tech to see public safety career education options, and visited DCF (Department for Children and Families). It was a full week that had a big impact on the 19 youth who attended the camp. Hopefully someday some of them will enter the public safety arena!
